C1980 Crown Headdress MEO PILU 'Silver' Totemic Crescent Moon Flower Timor-C796

From Hane in the Central Highlands of West Timor.

Collected in the field in 2008 by Julie Emery. C1980

Authentic Crescent Moon and Sun symbols depiciting male and female energies for fertility. Brought to me by Bapak Yustus a characteristic trader from the village. Probably made on the island of Ndao near Roti where the men are required to work silver and who create many of the 'silver' worked pieces in the eastern end of Indonesia.

Created using any available metal that is beaten to shape then covered with a thin layer of the high silver content dutch coins left in the spice isles by the retreating colonialists. The art and skill of creating these pieces of silver work is a dying art in Timor.
