The largest Timorese Kalai that I have and also the best representation of the lovely art of tying and knotting. Very old yet still in near perfect condition. Deep patina almost hides the varying shades of string in the weave.
This kalai is created from handrolled twine. It has a tightly woven base. Solid in its execution. The pull tie is Handrolled jungle string.
The West Timorese have a tradition of handweaving kalai or bilum bags. Not as large as their Papuan counterparts they are none the less an excellent representation of the art of rolling string by hand and knotting. Often created using jungle grass that is handrolled into lengths and knotted.
