This kalai is created from handrolled commercial twine. It has a loosley woven base. The string colour has come about from being stored in a smokey kitchen hut and it is solid in its execution. The pull tie is Handrolled string.
The West Timorese have a tradition of handweaving kalai or bilum bags. Not as large as their Papuan counterparts they are none the less an excellent representation of the art of rolling string by hand and knotting. Often created using jungle grass that is handrolled into lengths and knotted.
