64cm / 25" long (large by Timorese standards)

This kalai is created from handrolled commercial twine. It has a tightly woven base. Natural tan string colour with a slight smokey smell from the kitchen hut it was stored in and solid in its execution. The pull tie is Handrolled jungle vine string.

The West Timorese have a tradition of handweaving kalai  or  bilum bags. Not as large as their Papuan counterparts they are none the less an excellent representation of the art of rolling string by hand and knotting. Often created using jungle grass that is handrolled into lengths and knotted.
