This is a classic example of textile from the old Portugese enclave of Oekussi in what is known as East Timor. The strong European influence can be seen in the scrolling vine and flower motifs that surround the winged Angel/Cherubs.

I am unable to explain why it is that this particular area creates the coloured backgrounds in their textiles. This is a large men's blanket and is heavy to the feel yet soft to the touch. Handwoven using commercial cotton and dyes , it was woven over 10 years ago.
