This kalai is created from handrolled commercial string. It has a loosley woven base. Multi coloured and chunky in its execution. Slight smokey smell from the fires inside the storage hut. The pull tie is Handrolled nylon.
The Timorese have a tradition of handweaving kalai or bilum bags. Not as large as their Papuan counterparts they are none the less an excellent representation of the art of rolling string by hand and knotting. Often created using jungle grass that is handrolled into lengths and knotted.
