Made completely by hand in the village of Benlutu near SoE in central West Timor. Created by firstly crushing the clay gathered from the river bank then combining it with sand and hand patting the shape over a wetted smooth stone with the rib of a cow or buffalo then melded together to build and form the pots.
The pots are then stacked in a pile and wood stakes placed around the heap in tee pee fashion then fired. These smaller pots are used to cook herbs and barks over a low fire. Larger ones are balanced on scarves or small towels on the head to carry water from source back to the village.
This is a traditional herb medicine cooking pot.

Pots are used throughout Timor for carrying water and cooking particularly herbs for medicinal use are cooked in this style of pot. Unglazed with spiral ring around mouth and large dots decorating the body.
Every 20km or so there is a village or two that specialises in pot making. The pots are carried to the weekly market with the round base of one butted into the mouth of the next. Long bamboo poles are strapped along the length and all is bound with jungle vine. It is a remarkable sight seeing a procession of people walking their way up a river bed with these long and often large tubes on their heads. It is also rare that the pot makers have to cart any of their sought after produce home at the end of the day. Most are sold to grateful buyers.
