A very pleasing and sculptural representation of the totemic crocodile. Hand carved in the central highlands of West Timor in Eucalpytus that has been blackened. Unknown age.
Timor is known as the land of the sleeping crocodile which is why the totem figures so strongly in many Timorese pieces. Legend has it that the 'original' inhabitants passed thru into the open ocean and the island was not there. They decided to turn back and Timor had risen from the ocean looking like a sleeping crocodile.
Saltwater crocodiles are native to Timor and there are many stories about the locals contact with them before they were hunted out. There are a few remaining in captivity in East Timor and given the remoteness of some of the southern coastline I feel that there may well be a few left cruising around in the wild. Also called BESI in local language or buaya in Indonesian.
