These 3 great little containers have been created using a lontar palm seed that has been hollowed out then hand carved a piece of red cedarwood to act as the plug then finished the piece with black string.

The Timorese have a rich and vibrant culture surrounding the giving and chewing of betel nut. Lime powder containers and tobacco and betel nut containers are deliberately made of a different shape and construction to for both cultural and practical reasons. On the practical side it makes it easier to tell the difference in the dark of the hut or night when feeling arounds ones betel nut bag.
