M594 Contemporary Red
[M594]
$26.00

Beautifully executed in redwood. The artist has used the grain to accentuate the features in this mask. Fertility crescent moon on forehead. This timber will continue to deepen in colour to burgundy with age and oiling.

30cm high x 15cm wide.

12" high x 6" high.

500g/1lb1.7oz.

Using age old techniques and tools that have not changed much in the last 400 years the creators of these works of art have imbibed much of the Timorese spirit of independence and self sufficiency in to each unique piece. Masks represent an indicator of the strength that is still inherent within traditional Timorese tribal handcraft today.

Handcarved using the simplest of tools from wood, bone, coral and coconut Timorese masks fall into 3 main categories. Those made with paddle handles that are used to 'hide' ones face when raiding a neighbour in times of hunger. Those made to be placed inside the hut above the front entrance that repel anyone with evil intent and allow people of good intent to pass through the doorway and also used by Atoni men to 'put on a face' when dancing.

As a fellow field collector says "and then there are those that find you".

All items have been treated to AQIS standards.

Aquired in the field in 2000 by Julie Emery. Timorese textile, craft and fossil specialist since 1990.
