The Timorese have a distinctive and rich culture surrounding the giving and chewing of betel nut. These tobacco and betel nut containers are deliberately made of a different shape and construction to those which hold the lime powder for both cultural and practical reasons. It makes it easier to tell the difference in the dark of the hut or night.
