Handwoven Textiles from East Timor have as chequered history as its origins. East Timor is the worlds newest nation and is still struggling to find itself after 425 years of oppression. Many of their textiles are heavily influenced by Portugese design and colour combinations.
There is only one area that has maintained an unbroken tradition of textile weaving although various projects and encouragement by myself has resulted in 3 more areas restarting.
In the wake of the vote for independance a number of weaving co-operatives have begun that catered to the UN market by producing scarves with TIMOR LORO SAE and various other logos. Occassionally I am able to obtain textiles from East Timor that follow the more traditional lines. I present a selection in this section for you.
